Welcome to wheelchairbasketball.net
The site provides the basic tools to develop physical literacy with insights on how to serve children with mobility impairments. We lay out the basic knowledge, skills (chair and sport skills), and fundamental abilities kids 8 and under need to acquire and develop.
Knowledge of oneself, others and the rules of the game helps children build self-awareness and personal skills, strengthen cooperation and gain a greater understanding of game concepts.
Skills for moving the wheelchair make participation possible. Wheeling forwards and backwards, stopping, starting, changing direction, and stationary movements, like pivoting and popping a wheelie make activities more fun and challenging. Also, sports skills like passing, catching, shooting, dribbling, striking, sliding and picking up balls off the ground are common components of many games.
Abilities like speed, agility, endurance, strength, balance, coordination and flexibility make movement and sports skills possible.
Take advantage of the many activities that exist (and send us some of yours) or plot out a Facilitator Guide that builds on the KSAs needed to enjoy sport, recreation and play.
If you're not sure where to start, use the guide that best meets your needs.
